DML Morning Briefing: May 26
Today is May 26 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room, in my opinion.
1.New grand jury seated for next stage of Trump investigation
AP News– — New York prosecutors have convened a special grand jury to consider evidence in a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The development signals that the Manhattan district attorney’s office was moving toward seeking charges as a result of its two-year investigation, which included a lengthy legal battle to obtain Trump’s tax records.
The person familiar with the matter was not authorized to speak publicly and did so on condition of anonymity. The news was first reported by The Washington Post.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into a variety of matters such as hush-money payments paid to women on Trump’s behalf, property valuations and employee compensation.
DML: In other news President Trump continues to play golf, enjoy the sun, and push for a better America.
2.Portland police declare riot on George Floyd death anniversary
Fox News –Police in Portland, Oregon, declared a riot Tuesday night, making arrests after rioters smashed windows and threw objects at officers on the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death, according to authorities.
A crowd of roughly 200 people – many dressed in black – gathered outside the city’s Multnomah County Justice Center. Some lit a dumpster on fire and tagged the justice center with graffiti, while others yelled, “Burn the building down,” police said.
Some in the crowd also threw frozen water bottles and eggs at officers, along with metal spikes in the road, Portland police said. At one point fireworks were set off, according to a video posted on Twitter by Portland Mercury news editor Alex Zielinski.
DML: The United States of Joe is working out wonders for those folks who love chaos. And we are to believe 83 million people voted for this sort of thing? If so, I don’t know what country I am living in today because it doesn’t look or feel like the USA.
3-GOP leaders face new calls to boot Greene
The Hill — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is facing calls to boot Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) out of the GOP conference for her remarks comparing COVID-19 mask and vaccine rules to the genocide of 6 million Jews during World War II.
“Just stop. This is demented and dangerous. There is no comparison,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) tweeted at Greene Tuesday after she doubled down on her Holocaust comparison.
“I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: while we cannot stop her from calling herself a Republican, we can and should refuse to let her caucus with the @HouseGOP.”
On Tuesday, top House and Senate leaders took the rare step of rebuking Greene for comparing mask mandates and vaccine passports to the Holocaust after it became clear the headline-grabbing loyalist to former President Trump was not going to back down or apologize.
DML: Even though the comments appear to be taken out of context, she is entitled to her opinions just like AOC when the radical liberal compared the holding cells for illegal aliens in Texas to Nazi Germany prison camps. I have a great idea, ban all politicians from using Twitter and Instagram and guess what… this crap ends.
4-Hollywood Panic: ‘F9’ Star John Cena Could Have Cost NBCUniversal, WWE Billions Without Apology to China
Breibart.com — Hollywood star and WWE champion John Cena has apologized to China for correctly calling Taiwan a “country” during the recent press tour for the movie Fast & Furious 9. His groveling mea culpa highlights the degree to which Cena’s career has become intertwined with Communist China — and how his employers at NBCUniversal and the WWE could have lost billions of dollars if they angered Beijing.
In a video posted to China’s Weibo, John Cena acknowledged that he recently made a “mistake.” Though he didn’t elaborate, Cena appeared to be referring to a recent interview with a Taiwanese TV network during which he reportedly said Taiwan is “the first country to watch the movie.”
His remark set off a wave of social media criticism in China, with some fans demanding the actor acknowledge that Taiwan belongs to China.
Cena delivered his apology in Mandarin, which he has learned as part of the WWE’s efforts to expand into China.
“I made one mistake. I have to say something very, very, very important now,” Cena said in the Weibo video, “I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry about my mistake. I apologize, I apologize, I’m very sorry. You must understand that I really love, really respect China and the Chinese people. My apologies.”
DML: What a total loser.
5-Amazon to Buy MGM Studios
LA TIMES –The online shopping giant is buying MGM, the movie and TV studio behind James Bond, “Legally Blonde” and “Shark Tank,” with the hopes of filling its video streaming service with more stuff to watch.
Amazon is paying $8.45 billion for MGM, making it the company’s second-largest acquisition after it bought grocer Whole Foods for nearly $14 billion in 2017.
The deal is the latest in the media industry that’s aimed at boosting streaming services to compete against Netflix and Disney+. AT&T and Discovery announced on May 17 that they would combine media companies, creating a powerhouse that includes HGTV, CNN, Food Network and HBO.
DML: Translation: More liberal content for people to pay to watch with free money (aka Biden Bucks).
