DML Morning Briefing Thurs. Apr. 22: Biden, Dems, making their next moves…
By Team DML
Today is April 22 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room, in my opinion.
1 – House Dems ready to pass DC statehood Thursday, call on Senate to end filibuster to do same
Fox News reports: Democratic leaders Wednesday predicted passage of Washington, D.C. statehood legislation in the House and called on the Senate to end the filibuster now to create the 51st state in the union.
“I hope that the filibuster is jettisoned,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Wednesday. “It is not a democratic principle that a minority can … stop the majority.
The House is slated to vote on the D.C. statehood legislation Thursday and Hoyer said he expected the bill will pass with all or nearly all House Democrats in support. President Biden supports D.C. statehood and would sign the legislation into law.
The biggest challenge, however, will be in the 50-50 split Senate. With the legislative filibuster still in place, the statehood bill would require 60 votes to advance. Hoyer said Wednesday he hoped the Senate will change the “undemocratic” filibuster and would allow the statehood bill to pass in the upper chamber with a simple majority, like the House.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted Thursday morning:
The bill is authored by Eleanor Holmes Norton, District of Columbia delegate.
DML: If D.C. becomes the 51st state, it would have two senators and one House representative, all likely to be Democrat.
2 – Biden will announce pledge to cut carbon emissions by HALF by 2030 in climate summit with Putin, China’s Xi Jinping and 38 other world leaders this morning
The Daily Mail reports: President Joe Biden will ramp up US ambitions on slashing greenhouse gas emissions, putting the United States back at the forefront with a summit he hopes brings the world closer to limiting climate change.
In a virtual Earth Day summit, Biden will announce that the world’s largest economy will cut emissions blamed for climate change by 50 to 52 percent by 2030 compared with 2005 levels, officials said.
Biden, in a massive diplomatic undertaking for a three-month-old administration, is welcoming 40 leaders for two days of meetings, including the presidents of adversaries China and Russia and Pope Francis.
The new US target aims to ‘challenge the world on increasing ambition and combatting the climate crisis,’ an administration official, who spoke under customary condition of anonymity, told reporters.
DML: Here comes AOC’s Green New Deal.
3 – Kamala Harris to Meet Virtually with Guatemalan President
Breitbart reports: Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to meet virtually with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei to “collaborate” on migration solutions, according to a statement from a White House official.
Senior Advisor and Chief Spokesperson Symone Sanders issued the following statement Wednesday evening:
Vice President Kamala Harris and Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei will meet virtually on Monday, April 26. During this meeting, the two will discuss working together to address immediate relief needs of the Guatemalan people as well as deepening cooperation on migration.
The following day, the Vice President will participate in a virtual roundtable with representatives from Guatemalan community based organizations. This convening will be hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City and will underscore the importance of placing the Guatemalan people at the center of solutions to root causes of migration.
The Vice President last spoke with President Giammattei on March 30th. In that conversation, they agreed to collaborate on promoting economic development, leveraging technology, strengthening climate resilience, and creating the conditions to expand opportunity for people in their home countries in order to address the root causes of migration to the United States.
According to an Axios report on the matter, Harris will also travel to Guatemala in June.
DML: And that’s the Biden administration’s definition of handling the border crisis?
4 – US Postal Service Is Secretly Monitoring And Reporting Social Media Posts
The Daily Caller reports: A new report shows that the U.S. Postal Service has been secretly running a program that monitors American users’ social media posts and shares the information with different government agencies, according to a document acquired by Yahoo News.
According to the document, the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service has been engaged in a previously unknown surveillance effort, known as the Internet Covert Operations Program, to comb through social media sites for “inflammatory” posts, which are then reported to the government, Yahoo News reported Wednesday.
“Analysts with the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP) monitored significant activity regarding planned protests occurring internationally and domestically on March 20, 2021,” the document, marked as “law enforcement sensitive,” says. “Locations and times have been identified for these protests, which are being distributed online across multiple social media platforms, to include right-wing leaning Parler and Telegram accounts.”
The document includes several different screenshots of posts from Parler, Facebook, and other social media sites, and says that the surveillance program is monitoring these sites to identify any possible threats.
DML: This is chilling.
5 – Texas high school caves to ‘woke’ culture over dress-code controversy
Fox News reports: A West Texas school district on Monday unanimously voted for a change in the student dress code policy that eliminates gender-specific language after a high schooler complained his suspension for painting his nails was a “double standard.”
The Clyde Consolidated Independent School District’s board of trustees approved the changes for the 2021-22 school year, the Abilene Reporter-News reported.
The change to the school’s dress code evidently came about thanks to the efforts of Trevor Wilkinson, a “beyond proud” gay senior at Clyde High School in Clyde, Texas. Wilkinson, 17, received an in-school suspension late last year for having painted his nails – a violation of the school’s dress code.
“imagine your school not allowing boys to paint their nails and giving boys [in-school suspension] for it,” Wilkinson tweeted Nov. 30, 2020. “and the whole administration being okay with it, homophobic and sexist? welcome to west texas.”
He started a petition, which gained hundreds of thousands of signatures, and on Monday the school board voted to update the district’s dress code policy to use the word “students” instead of “boys” and “girls.”
In early March, one Twitter user wrote, “I hate that I’m having to grow up with a cry baby generation.”
Wilkinson responded, “and i hate that i’m having to grow up in a yee haw conservative town who embodies what’s wrong with this world, but beggars can’t be choosers hunny.”
Wilkinson celebrated his success, tweeting on Monday, “MY HIGH SCHOOLS DRESS CODE IS GENDER NEUTRAL FOREVER OH MY GOODNESS.”
DML: Just can’t make this stuff up, folks.
